The History of the Institute

By the order of the USSR Academy of Sciences of 09.04.1968, on the basis of the resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers of 21.02.1968, the Scientific Council on Synthetic Materials was established under the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The newly formed Council was headed by academician K. A. Andrianov (1904-1978). The same decisions provided for the construction of a laboratory building with an area of up to 3000 m2 to ensure the work of the Council. Since February 1972, the new section on high-strength materials of the Scientific Council on Synthetic Materials has been headed by a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR N. S. Enikolopov. He became the scientific director of this research area and at the same time was appointed deputy chairman of this Council, and since 1978 — Chairman of the Council.

The construction of the laboratory building under the Scientific Council on Synthetic Materials actually began in 1977.

The beginning of the establishment of the Institute as a scientific institution of the Academy of Sciences dates back to 1980. The decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of 04.09.1980 and the Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences of 05.03.1981 defined the list of the main directions of scientific activity of the Institute.

In the Resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Academician N.S. Enikolopov, at that time chairman of the Scientific Council on Synthetic Materials, was assigned the duties of the scientific director of the ISPM.

In the period 1978-1986, academician N.S. Enikolopov focused on the completion of the construction of the laboratory and administrative buildings of the current ISPM. In fact, he headed it as a supervisor of the scientific groups working in the ICP RAS, INEOS RAS, GNIHTEOS. During the same period, under his direct supervision, the laboratories of the Institute started forming. Since 1981 graduates of MIPT, MSU, MKHTI, etc. were hired by ISPM.

In March 1985, N.S. Enikolopov was officially appointed director of the Institute. By the end of 1986, ISPM employees began to be housed in the newly constructed laboratory and administrative buildings.

The main directions of scientific activity of the ISPM RAS, formulated under the guidance of Academician N. S. Enikolopov, have been further developed and have remained relevant. Among them are highly efficient mechanical and chemical solid-phase syntheses and methods for modifying polymer materials, original approaches and methods for producing multifunctional polymer composites, the application of the principle of elastic-deformation grinding in the secondary processing of polymer materials, and a number of others.

After the death of Academician N. S. Enikolopov in January 1993, ISPM RAS was headed by academician N.F. Bakeev. By the Decree of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences No. 235 of June 16, 1998, the Institute was named after Academician N.S. Enikolopov.

From June 2002 to 2018, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.N. Ozerin was the director of the ISPM RAS. Since 2018, the post of director of the ISPM RAS has been held by the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences S.A. Ponomarenko.
